EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
