In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
